Jesus said, “In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). The apostle Peter heard Jesus say these words, and he also experienced the reality of that truth. The life of a true believer and follower of Jesus will be marked with difficulty and trials as a part of God conforming us to the image of His Son. Persecution of Christians is inevitable, whether it is social alienation or actual physical suffering; at some point followers of Jesus will experience this reality.
The apostle Peter wrote to the churches in Asia Minor who were facing imminent persecution for their faith and encouraged them to stand firm in the true grace of God. These truths from Peter are timely for the church as we face present and potential difficulty for being identified with Jesus. This portion of the Scripture will encourage and equip us for the inevitable.
