Covenant Membership

The phrase “local church membership” is not found anywhere in the Bible.

A priority is placed on church membership by various churches for mostly commitment purposes, accountability, and shepherding. However, the Scripture does not mandate this procedure. The Bible does make it clear that when a person accepts Christ, they become a member of His Body, the Church. The commitment to a local body is implied in the New Testament.

Acts 2:46; 13:1; 20:17-18; Romans 16:1-27; 1 Corinthians 1:2; 2 Corinthians 1:1; Galatians 1:2; Ephesians 1:1; Philippians 1:1; Colossians 1:2; 1 Thessalonians 1:1; 1 Timothy 1:3-4; Titus 1:5; Hebrews 10:23-25; 1 Peter 1:1; 5:1-3; 2 John 1:1; 3 John 1:1; Revelation 1:1-3:22

The New Testament does tell believers to meet regularly with a group of like-minded Christians who love, serve, and encourage one another.

Romans 12:4-5; Ephesians 4:16; 1 Timothy 3:15
